Indian Journalists Union (IJU) joins Kashmir Journalists Association (KJA) in expressing grave concern at the highhandedness of police against Article 14 news portal’s journalist Auqib Javeed. Javeed was summoned by Kashmir Cyber Police regarding a story published in the Article14 portal. He was slapped and abused by police in the cyber police head quarter at Srinagar. IJU President and former member of Press Council of India Geetartha Pathak and Secretary General and Vice President of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Sabina Inderjit said in a press statement that the behaviour of Kashmir police is unacceptable and the authority must take stern action against the concerned police officials for violating media right and freedom of expression.
IJU leaders further said that summoning of journalists by police and security persons has become common practice in the valley. The higher ups in the police and security agencies must sensitise the subordinates to respect freedom of media and expression and rights enjoyed by media.IJU demanded the authorities to end such illegal practice and to create an environment where Journalists can work freely and fearlessly.
