Morigaon, August 2, 2025: In a significant relief measure, the Assam Forest Department has released ₹2,17,500 in compensation to 29 farmers from Mayong, located adjacent to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, for crop losses incurred during the 2024-25 agricultural season. Each farmer received ₹7,500 to offset damages caused by wild animals, including rhinos, buffaloes, and wild boars, which strayed from the sanctuary and ravaged crops such as maize, rice, and mustard. The farmers, primarily from the Satibheti and Rajamayong areas, had submitted their compensation claims to the Range Forest Officer at Pobitora earlier this year, highlighting the severe impact of straying buffaloes on their livelihoods. The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary authorities have been working diligently to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in the region. A dedicated team, supported by trained departmental elephants and 13 newly established Anti-Depredation Squads in nearby villages, has been instrumental in safely guiding stray animals back to their natural habitat. Equipped with essential tools and resources, these squads have also conducted awareness campaigns to educate local communities about coexisting with wildlife, particularly during the lean season when animals are more likely to venture outside the sanctuary in search of food. This proactive approach not only ensures the safety of the sanctuary’s wildlife but also provides critical support to farmers who depend on agriculture for their year-round sustenance. The compensation and mitigation efforts reflect the Forest Department’s commitment to balancing wildlife conservation with the needs of local communities, fostering harmony in this ecologically sensitive region.
