Morigaon, August 15: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary under the Guwahati Wildlife Division celebrated the 79th Independence Day with a series of green and community-focused activities.
The day began with a plantation drive along the tourist roadside within the sanctuary, featuring native species such as Ajar, Krishnachura, and Arjun. The programme saw the presence of retired ACF and former Range Officer of Pobitora WLS Mukul Tamuli, Range Officer Pranjal Baruah, Nripen Nath of the Jeep Safari Association, and the sanctuary’s frontline staff. Around 300 seedlings were also distributed to the public to raise awareness about the urgent need for afforestation.
The tricolour was hoisted at the Range HQ at 7:30 am, followed by a spirited bike rally. The rally, flagged off by Mukul Tamuli, covered Pobitora, Mayong, Chandrapur, Narengi, Sonapur, Chamata, and Kolongpar, with the participation of 40 bikers from the sanctuary.
Later in the day, a boat race was held at Haduk Beel at 12:30 pm, inaugurated by DFO, Guwahati Wildlife Division, Alekh Saxena, IFS, along with other dignitaries. Six teams comprising 30 forest staff from different categories, including frontline workers, AFPF personnel, mahouts, fixed-pay, and casual staff, competed in the event. The race concluded at 1:30 pm, followed by a medal distribution ceremony.
In the evening, a volleyball match was played between Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary at 4:30 pm, wrapping up the celebrations on a high note.
