The Indian media fraternity mourns the loss of Baikuntha Nath Goswami, a towering figure in Assamese journalism, who passed away today in Guwahati at the age of 79. Goswami, a veteran editor, author, and Chief Adviser to the Journalists’ Union of Assam (JUA), leaves behind an unparalleled legacy in regional and national journalism, marked by his unwavering commitment to press freedom, ethical reporting, and the cultural identity of Assam.Born in August 1946 in Bamunkuchi, Pathsala, Assam, Goswami’s career spanned over five decades, during which he shaped the landscape of Assamese media. Beginning in the 1960s, he worked in editorial roles at prominent dailies such as Dainik Agradoot and Dainik Janambhumi, and the weekly Saptahik Nilachal. His tenure as Bureau Chief at the United News of India (UNI) Patna unit and his contributions to News Star and Asom Bhumi Kakata as editor showcased his versatility in both English and Assamese journalism. Goswami’s incisive reporting brought Assam’s socio-political issues to national attention, earning him widespread respect.Beyond journalism, Goswami was a prolific author, penning influential books such as Jnanamala I and II (folk tale collections), Nibandha Chayan (selected essays), Asomiya Jatiyatabad aru Asomiyar Sangjna (on Assamese nationalism), and Sangbad Madhyamar Swadhinata (on media freedom). His writings blended cultural preservation with advocacy for journalistic integrity, resonating deeply with readers.As a co-founder of the Guwahati Press Club and Chief Adviser to the JUA, affiliated with the Indian Journalists’ Union (IJU), Goswami mentored countless journalists and championed their welfare.
